Family PsychologyWith a Specialization in Logotherapy
Clinical training specializing in family assessment and intervention through systemic and Logotherapy approaches, understanding the person in the context of their relationships.
Description
The family is the fundamental social group for achieving the emotional balance of its members. Understanding society as a collection of family units, a stable family dynamic can be seen as the foundation of a nation's development.
Disruptions in family dynamics manifest as family disorders or conflicts, which vary in their origin, nature, and evolution, and may present acutely or chronically, in mild, moderate, or severe form.
The Guatemalan family is vulnerable to external influences such as other family groups, social and cultural phenomena, and stressful life events. Family therapeutic counseling is therefore needed to restore balance and minimize the negative effects of dysfunctional family dynamics.

Objectives
- Train Family Psychology professionals capable of responding to today's challenges: family conflict, absence or conflict of values, addictions, infidelity, violence, and existential emptiness.
- Develop the skills needed for professional practice: family and individual psychotherapy, teaching, research, workshops, seminars, parenting schools, support groups, and prevention programs.
- Contribute to the protection and restoration of Guatemalan families through personal and family assessment, precise diagnosis, and the application of appropriate psychotherapy techniques.
- Enable graduates to work alongside other mental-health professionals and advise on the family perspective in public policy, business, and social and health work.
Graduate profile
The Family Psychologist will be able to work in clinical practice, teaching, and family counseling, and will be equipped to:
- Assess the personal dynamics of each member and of the family as a whole.
- Identify, with a high degree of precision, the most frequent personal and family psychopathology.
- Develop an evidence-based clinical diagnosis to chart an effective treatment plan.
- Apply the individual and family psychotherapy techniques best suited to each circumstance and need.
- Take part in multidisciplinary teams with professionals from mental health, social work, and law.
- Know, value, and apply the core bioethical criteria: respect for life and for the dignity of the person, the foundation of the family sciences.
